We got to see the tragedy from four—Joana, Florian, Emilia, and Alfred—different perspectives. How their paths somehow intertwined with each other.
This gotta be the most intense book I’ve ever read in 2016. Also it took me so long to finally finished this book because how intense it was… I had to take a lots of break while reading this book. Don’t get me wrong, it wasn’t because this book was bad, because the imagery was so vivid I feel like I was there experiencing this all with all of the characters. Like when something happened, I had to close the book and process all the emotion that’s coming through, because sometimes it could get too much and I just couldn’t handle it. It sounds like I’m exaggerating, but I’m not.
That’s one of the specialty of Ruta Sepetys. You just don’t get to know something new, she also has the ability to transport you into her story with her writing. As if you were them, the characters.
Like she basically makes history sounds interesting! Not mind numbingly at all. And it was just a little glimpse of what happened.
I highly, highly, recommended this book to anyone who’s interested in or those who is new to historical fiction. Salt to The Sea is a great starter, I would recommend her other book, Between Shades of Gray, as well.
